Unveiled on Apple’s online event, the new iPhone 12 models are marking some of the biggest changes to Apple's smartphones since the iPhone X in 2017.
Now with square metal sides and flatter profile, the four new devices are a reminder of the iPhone 5 from 2013. All of the new iPhone 12 phones run on Apple's latest A14 Bionic processor as well as have Face ID recognition system for unlocking the smartphones and will also support 5G for the first time.
The mid-range model is simply called the iPhone 12 and is a direct replacement for the iPhone 11. It has a new and improved 6.1" OLED screen replacing previously used LCD technology. 11% thinner than the previous model with a new Ceramic Shield screen glass technology that now has four times the drop performance of previous display glass.
The smallest of the new Apple phones is the iPhone 12 Mini, which has a 5.4" screen, making the phone slightly smaller than current iPhone SE but with a larger display filling the full form of the device.
The smaller high-end iPhone is called the iPhone 12 Pro and has a similar 6.1" OLED screen to the iPhone 12 — larger than the 5.8" screen of the iPhone 11 Pro from 2019.
The largest high-end iPhone will now be the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which has a 6.7" OLED screen — 0.2" larger, on the diagonal, than the previous iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Both iPhone 12 Pro models have improved triple-camera systems on the back with ultra-wide, normal and new telephoto lenses, plus a lidar-based depth-sensing scanner that can measure the distance of objects up to 5 metres away and aids in autofocus.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro phones were released on 23rd of October with the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone Pro Max soon to follow on 13th of November. Size specs of the new iPhone 12 range below for reference:
